....Next up, The Rock Of Travolta, who make God Speed You Black Emperor! sound like Abba. The Rock deal in cinematic instrumental rock and throw all the right moves, windmilling guitar, pointing, legs astride and trying to play a cello like a violin. It is ‘The Best Indie Air Guitar Album In The World…Ever!’ made flesh. In their minds The Rock are playing to a sell out crowd when the reality is far too grim to contemplate. Those watching are divided as to whether this is excellent behaviour or simply barking mad. Yet there’s a feeling all bands should play like this, with attitude, and the Rock have got it in spades.
What the Rock haven’t got at the moment is an audience but that will come. It’s unfortunate that The Rock may be pencilled in the same high concept category as Godspeed…, …And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of The Dead et al. By doing this people could be put off seeing them. Don’t be for The Rock are far more interesting than that. If one wants an evening of high octane riffing, ambition and attitude look no further.
