live 2005

The Wheatsheaf, 11 March 2005

So next, the all new Rock of Travolta. Well, the sort of new Rock of Travolta. Okay okay, the cut-down Rock of Travolta. It was interesting seeing them have some space on a stage for once (gone are the days of having 28 members, or however many there once were), and I was intrigued to hear if their sound – indeed their set – had changed and developed since the loss of members. My response to them was, then, slightly confused. I was disappointed that – more or less – they came across like the same old Rock that they ever did. Supremely confident tunes, bombastic melodies and faux-arrogant performing. However I was also pleased that they sounded the same as ever; because they’re great, aren’t they? When they’re on form – and they were tonight – they’re an exciting and enjoyable band to watch. I’m just hoping that they’re still in a period of transition, and that given time they’ll step out of the shadow of the former Rock, with a developed and refined style which befits their new lineup.
